What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. By breaking your workday into 25-minute focus intervals separated by short breaks, you maintain high concentration while preventing mental fatigue. The technique gets its name from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer (pomodoro in Italian) Cirillo used as a university student.

How It Works

  1. Choose a single task to focus on.
  2. Start the timer for 25 minutes (one Pomodoro session).
  3. Work with complete focus until the chime rings.
  4. Take a short 5-minute break.
  5. After completing 4 sessions, take a longer 15–30 minute break.

Benefits of the Pomodoro Technique

  • Sustained focus and reduced mental exhaustion
  • Better awareness of time and estimation accuracy
  • Fewer distractions and less multitasking
  • Regular rest to maintain energy throughout the day
  • Effective antidote to procrastination
